戲
- play;
- game;
- amusement;
- to play;
- to tease;
Etymology
A phono-semantic compound composed of:
戈 — semantic component meaning “spear” or “weapon;”
䖒 — phonetic component providing the sound (희 / xì).
The phonetic component 䖒 itself consists of 虍 and 豆, where 豆 originally represented a decorated ceremonial drum or vessel.
According to traditional explanations (such as in Shuowen Jiezi 《說文解字》), the character originally referred to military instruments or implements used in warfare. Soldiers practiced and handled weapons and instruments in ways resembling skillful play or performance.
From this idea of skillfully manipulating weapons or instruments, the meaning gradually extended to play, amusement, or playful behavior.
Semantic development:
- military instruments or implements used in war;
- skillful manipulation of weapons;
- actions resembling playful activity;
- play, amusement, drama, or teasing.
Thus the meaning shifted from military practice and performance to entertainment and play.
