Etymology

Phono-semantic compound:

戈 (halberd, spear) – semantic, indicating weapons/warfare.

單 (single, alone) – phonetic element.

Originally denoted the act of combat. In early usage the sound value was close to 單, hence its choice as phonetic. Over time the modern pronunciation diverged, and in Simplified Chinese the phonetic component was altered to 占, yielding 战.

Usage in Korean

戰爭 (전쟁) – war

戰鬪 (전투) – battle, combat

內戰 (내전) – civil war

戰國 (전국) – Warring States

戰慄 (전율) – shiver, tremble
