弘
- great;
- vast;
- broad;
Etymology
弘 is considered a derivative of 引 (to draw, to pull).
Original conceptual development:
to draw outward → to extend → to enlarge.
Thus 弘 came to mean:
- vast;
- broad;
- expansive.
It often pairs with 宏 (굉) to express largeness.
The character appears in the personal name of the Qianlong Emperor:
愛新覺羅 弘曆 (Aisin-Gioro Hongli)
Because of imperial naming taboos, 弘 was sometimes avoided in writing during the Qing dynasty.
Semantic development:
- to draw out;
- to extend;
- vast / great;
- to promote or expand (abstract sense).
