Etymology

A phono-semantic compound:

衣 (“clothing”) — semantic element, often indicating garments or by extension “covering, provision.”

谷 (yu / yù, “valley, abundance”) — phonetic element, providing sound.

Original sense: “ample clothing” → by extension, “abundance, prosperity.”

Later broadened to mean “wealth, generosity, magnanimity.”

Usage in Korean

富裕 (부유) — rich, wealthy

寬裕 (관유) — generous, tolerant

餘裕 (여유) — surplus, leisure, spare capacity

裕福 (유복) — prosperous, fortunate

裕厚 (유후) — magnanimous, liberal

Additional notes

In Classical Chinese, 裕 often referred to having more than enough (especially clothing/food), and thus came to imply comfort and prosperity.

Figuratively, 裕 describes a person as broad-minded, magnanimous, generous.

Still common in modern Chinese, Japanese, and Korean given names, carrying the wish for abundance, wealth, and generosity.
