Etymology

Phono-semantic compound:

(halberd, spear) – semantic, indicating weapons/warfare.

(single, alone) – phonetic element.

Originally denoted the act of combat. In early usage the sound value was close to , hence its choice as phonetic. Over time the modern pronunciation diverged, and in Simplified Chinese the phonetic component was altered to , yielding 战.
