輔

  • to assist;
  • to support;

Etymology

A phono-semantic compound:

車 (차) — wagon, semantic

甫 (보) — phonetic

Originally, 輔 referred to a supporting beam or attachment on a cart, something that does not move independently but ensures balance and direction. From this concrete image developed the abstract meaning: “That which stands beside and enables proper movement.”

Hence, 輔 came to mean assisting, supporting, or advising.

Usage in Korean

보좌 (輔佐) — assistance; attending a superior

보필 (輔弼) — close advisory support

보조 (輔助) — aid; auxiliary help

보국 (輔國) — assisting the state

보정 (輔政) — assisting in government

보익 (輔益) — beneficial assistance

Additional notes

輔 always implies supporting from the side.

Carries a hierarchical nuance:

- the assisted party is primary

- the helper is essential but secondary

Thus 輔 differs from:

助 — general help

扶 — physical or direct support

佐 — official assistance

Semantic family:

佐 — to assist officially

助 — to help

扶 — to support physically

弼 — high-level advisory support

Contrast characters:

主 — to lead

獨 — alone

乏 — lacking support

Classical citations:

Confucian classics (Analects)

「輔仁以行。」

“Assist benevolence in putting it into practice.”

Here 輔 implies active moral support, not passive help.

Book of Documents (書經)

「左右輔弼」

“Those who assist and advise on both sides.”

A fixed classical phrase referring to trusted ministers beside the ruler.

Mencius (孟子)

「得道者多助,失道者寡助。」

“Those who possess the Way receive much assistance; those who lose it receive little.”

Though 助 is used explicitly, 輔 appears frequently in parallel passages and commentaries as institutional or ministerial aid.

In Buddhist Chinese:

「輔道因緣」

“Conditions that assist the Path.”

輔 here indicates secondary but necessary conditions aiding enlightenment.
