• to wait;

Etymology

A phono-semantic compound:

(step radical) – providing the meaning

(temple) – providing the sound

The character came to express the idea of staying put while expecting, hence “to wait.”

Semantic development:

To remain in place → to wait

To wait upon someone → to treat someone

Waiting with intention → patience, strategy

This explains why 待 can mean both “wait” and “treat.”

Usage in Korean

等待 (기대) — waiting (literary)

待機 (대기) — standby; waiting state

待遇 (대우) — treatment; reception

接待 (접대) — reception; hospitality

待命 (대명) — await orders

優待 (우대) — preferential treatment

冷待 (냉대) — cold treatment

Alternative forms

待 often implies intentional patience, not mere delay.

Compared with (to watch for / observe), 待 emphasizes endurance rather than vigilance.

In Classical Chinese, 待 frequently appears in military, political, and ethical contexts.

《論語》 (The Analects)

「士不可不弘毅,任重而道遠,仁以為己任,不亦重乎?死而後已,不亦遠乎?」

"A gentleman must be both broad-minded and resolute, For his burden is heavy and his journey long. To take benevolence as one's mission— Is that not a heavy responsibility? To persevere until death— Is that not a long journey?"

Contains 待-related ethical usage through later commentarial tradition.

《史記》 (Records of the Grand Historian)

「待時而動。」

“Wait for the right time, then act.”

Here, 待 expresses strategic patience, not passive idleness.
