Etymology

It is a phono-semantic compound, consisting of:

(jok, “foot”) as the semantic element;

(gak, “each”) as the phonetic element.

This is considered one of the less obvious examples of a phono-semantic compound. In ancient forms, variants appear with (double person radical, “step”) or (movement radical) instead of .
