路
- road, path, way;
Etymology
It is a phono-semantic compound, consisting of:
足 (jok, “foot”) as the semantic element;
各 (gak, “each”) as the phonetic element.
This is considered one of the less obvious examples of a phono-semantic compound. In ancient forms, variants appear with 彳 (double person radical, “step”) or 辵 (movement radical) instead of 足.
