Etymology

It is a phono-semantic compound, consisting of:

糸 (sa, “thread, silk”) as the semantic element;

𧶠 (yuk, “to sell, phonetic”) as the phonetic element.

Depending on the script style, the right side may appear as 賣 (mae, “to sell”), but this is only a graphic resemblance. Just as in 讀 (독, “to read”), the right-hand component comes from 𧶠 and is unrelated to “selling.”

In older forms, the right-hand part was clearly written as 𧶠.
