• to put, to place, to set down;

Etymology

It is a phono-semantic compound, consisting of:

网/罒 (mang, “net, cover”) above;

直 (jik, “straight, upright”) below.

Together originally forming the character 罝 (a net for catching animals) as the semantic element (something set in place);

直 (jik, “straight”) also contributes as the phonetic element.

Over time, 置 developed the general meaning of “to put in place, to arrange, to set.”

Usage in Korean

Still very common in modern vocabulary, especially in technical and administrative terms (배치, 설치, 위치).

배치 (配置) – arrangement, placement

설치 (設置) – installation, setup

방치 (放置) – leaving something unattended, neglect

위치 (位置) – position, location
