Etymology

It is a phono-semantic compound, consisting of:

罒 (mang, “net”) as the semantic element;

維 (yu, “cord, to tie”) as the phonetic element.

Usage in Korean

In Korean surnames (羅씨, read Na or Ra), the character is also interpreted as “아름다울 라” (“beautiful, as in fine silk”), reflecting the association with “piled silk being beautiful.” For this reason, it often appears in personal names with the nuance of “beauty” or “elegance.”

It is also frequently used in Buddhist terminology and as a phonetic transcription element in Idu script.

It is also used as an abbreviation for 신라 (新羅, Silla Kingdom), most famously in 나당동맹 (羅唐同盟, Silla–Tang Alliance).

Common compounds:

나열 (羅列) – listing, array, enumeration

망라 (網羅) – encompassing, covering, including all

라성 (羅城) – city wall (esp. used historically)

신라 (新羅) – the Silla Kingdom
