摋

An extremely rare classical character.

Phono-semantic compound:

手 (손 수) — semantic, hand, indicates action involving striking, handling.

殺 (죽일 살) — or its ancient form as phonetic, gives the approximate reading 살.

The phonetic component 殺 supplied the sound, but the meaning diverged; 摋 does not mean “to kill.”

Thus the original sense is “to strike / to beat with the hand.”

The character is mostly found in Middle Chinese rhyme books, Tang rhyme tables, and classical variants lists, not in everyday literary usage.

In Korean, 摋(살) is extremely rare and does not appear in standard Sino-Korean vocabulary. Its meaning is known only through classical lexicons.

Nevertheless, its core semantic field:

Striking / beating (archaic):

摋擊 (살격) — 때려서 공격함 (theoretical/lexicon form)

摋打 (살타) — 손으로 치다 (rare; reconstructed usage)

Rubbing / scraping (lexicon-based):

摋摩 (살마) — 문지르다; 비비다 (dictionary sense only)

Note: These forms do not occur in modern Korean texts; they are reconstructed from classical definitions.

In modern East Asian languages—including Korean, Chinese, and Japanese—it is seldom used except in academic lexicons.

Distinction from 擦 / 撒:

擦 — to wipe, rub (modern, common)

撒 — to scatter

摋 — archaic, “strike/rub violently”
