Etymology

Phono-semantic compound:

人 (사람 인, “person”) — semantic, indicating human practice or arrangement.

列 (벌일 렬, “to arrange, line up”) — phonetic, giving the sound and hinting at order.

Originally signified “things lined up or arranged in order by people,” hence “rule, regulation,” later extended to “case, example.”
