Etymology

Pictophonetic/Associative compound:

卜 (점 복) – originally associated with divination (to seek guidance or correctness);

貝 (조개 패) – symbol of value, currency in ancient times.

Originally, 貞 referred to consulting an oracle to determine the right and proper course. Over time, its meaning evolved to “uprightness,” “virtue,” and “moral integrity.”

Usage in Korean

Common words using 貞:

貞操 (정조) – chastity;

貞烈 (정렬) – virtuous and steadfast;

專貞 (전정) – devotion, unwavering faithfulness.

Additional notes

In Confucian and traditional East Asian values, 貞 is strongly associated with female chastity (e.g., “貞女” – chaste woman).

It also carries the broader sense of honorable steadfastness for both men and women.
