• to change, to transform;
  • upheaval;

Etymology

It is composed of 䜌 (variously interpreted as “confused,” “to govern,” or “continuous”) plus 攵 (“to strike, to act”). Although its structure looks simple, scholars have debated the meaning of 䜌, which makes the etymology of 變 contested.

In the Shuowen Jiezi, 䜌 is treated simply as the phonetic element, making 變 a standard phono-semantic compound.

Other interpretations see it as a compound ideograph, e.g.:

“To strike (攵) and govern (䜌)” - thus “to change.”

“Confused (䜌) movements (攵)” - thus “to change.”

A hand playing a string instrument (䜌), constantly shifting position (攵).

A shaman (䜌) breaking a vow with a god by striking (攵), symbolizing change.

Normally, in characters with 䜌 as the phonetic, the radical is the semantic part. Thus, one might expect 變 to be classified under 攵. However, by convention it is instead listed under 言, which is part of 䜌.

Usage in Korean

In Korean usage, 변 (變) appears in numerous Sino-Korean compounds, often expressing “change” or “transformation”:

변화 (變化) – change, transformation

변동 (變動) – fluctuation, shift

변신 (變身) – transformation of the body

변질 (變質) – deterioration, corruption of quality

이변 (異變) – an unusual change, calamity

천변만화 (千變萬化) – “ever-changing,” infinitely variable

Thus, while historically linked to complex etymological debates, in modern Korean the character consistently conveys the sense of alteration, transformation, or upheaval.
