• to teach, to instruct, to educate;

Etymology

Compound form:

爻 (interweaving lines, exchange, interaction) – sometimes treated as a phonetic element;

子 (child) – semantic, indicating the one being taught;

攴 (to strike with a stick) – semantic, indicating action, discipline, instruction.

Original image: a child being corrected with a stick, symbolizing the act of teaching through guidance and discipline.

Over time, the meaning broadened from training/discipline to education and instruction in general.

Semantic range:

- to teach, to instruct;

- education, moral or formal learning;

- to transmit doctrine or moral principles;

- to cause, to make someone do (classical grammar function, similar to 使).

Usage in Korean

敎育 (교육) – education

敎師 (교사) – teacher

敎訓 (교훈) – lesson, moral teaching

敎化 (교화) – civilizing, moral transformation

敎會 (교회) – church, religious congregation

Additional notes

In oracle bone inscriptions, the form shows variation: 爻 sometimes with one or two X-shaped lines, and 子 sometimes present or absent.

The variant 教 (with 攵 replaced by 攴 simplified as ⺙) became the standard form in most of the Sinosphere (China, Japan, Vietnam). Korea alone preserves 敎 as the primary standard.

In Classical Chinese, 敎 could also mean to order, to cause someone to act.

In Idu script (이두 吏讀), it was sometimes glossed as isan or isi, meaning “(a superior) commands or speaks.”
