酉
- chicken, rooster;
It also represents the tenth Earthly Branch (열 번째 지지) in the traditional Chinese zodiac and time system.
Etymology
酉 is a pictograph originally representing the shape of a wine jar used for brewing alcohol. As 酉 became the tenth Earthly Branch (열 번째 지지) in the Chinese zodiac system, the original meaning related to alcohol split off into a separate character 酒 (술 주), which includes the water radical 水 on the left.
The animal associated with the tenth Earthly Branch is the rooster (닭).
Usage in Korean
As mentioned, 酉 originally meant “alcohol,” so most characters with the 酉 radical are related to alcohol or fermentation.
