辯
- peech;
- eloquence;
- to argue;
- to explain;
Etymology
辯 is a phono-semantic compound that also shows traits of a compound ideograph:
言 (말씀 언) — provides the semantic component, representing speech or words.
辡 (송사할 변) — supplies both sound and associative meaning (“to dispute, to argue”).
Together, they depict speech used in litigation or reasoning, hence the extended sense of “to debate” or “to distinguish by speech.”
Historically, 辯, 辨 (분별할 변), and 辧 were used interchangeably, all relating to verbal distinction, debate, or clarity of argument.
Over time, subtle distinctions emerged:
辯 — speech, argument, eloquence (focus on verbal reasoning);
辨 — distinguish, discern (moral/intellectual discrimination);
辧 — early orthographic variant.
Philological notes:
《說文解字》 (Shuōwén Jiězì): lists 辯 as a primary entry, glossing it as 辯,治言也 — “辯 means to regulate speech.”
《康熙字典》 (Kāngxī Zìdiǎn): mistakenly cites 䛒 as the original form following Zihui Supplement, but textual comparison shows 辯 predated 䛒 in Han sources.
Simplified and Japanese forms: both replace 辯 with 弁, the simpler “cap” character, due to phonetic similarity rather than etymological relation.
Usage in Korean
辯論 (변론) — debate, argument
雄辯 (웅변) — eloquence, oratory

Additional notes
In Chinese philosophy, 辯 represents the power of language to clarify truth or conceal it.
During the Warring States period, the School of Names (名家) and thinkers such as Gongsun Long (公孫龍) elevated 辯 into a tool of logic and paradox.
Confucianism: valued 正言 (right speech) and warned against 巧辯 (clever but deceitful rhetoric) — eloquence divorced from virtue.
Buddhism: uses 辯才 (eloquence of wisdom) to describe enlightened verbal expression — especially the “Four Kinds of Eloquence (四辯才)” attributed to bodhisattvas.
In classical texts and poetry, 辯 may praise articulate wisdom or satirize sophistry.
It embodies the tension between truth-seeking discourse and rhetorical persuasion.
