• to meet, to welcome;
  • to receive (a person, guest, etc.);

Etymology

It is a phono-semantic compound, consisting of:

辵 (chwak/착, “to walk slowly, to go”) as the semantic element;

卬 (ang, “I, to lift up”) as the phonetic element.

Its original meanings were “to welcome, to meet” and “to go against, to oppose.” Because it shared both meaning and a similar pronunciation with 逆 (역, “to oppose, to go against”), the two are considered cognates. In modern usage, however, 迎 is used only in the sense “to welcome, to meet,” while 逆 carries the meaning “to oppose, to resist.”

Usage in Korean

Very common in modern words like 환영 (welcome) and 영접 (reception).

The older sense of “to oppose” has disappeared in Korean usage, remaining only in 逆.

Common compounds:

환영 (歡迎) – welcome, reception;

영접 (迎接) – reception, greeting;

영송 (迎送) – receiving and sending off;

영혼 (迎魂) – receiving the soul (ritual context);
