Etymology

Originally a pictograph in oracle bone and bronze inscriptions:

卩 (kneeling person) – indicates humility, submission.

廾 (two hands held up) – indicates offering or supporting.

The combined image shows a kneeling figure with hands uplifted, symbolizing receiving or bearing something with respect.

Later, in the Small Seal script (小篆), 手 (hand) was added to reinforce the meaning of “to hold/support.” By the Clerical Script (隸書 lìshū), the character took its current standardized form.
