Etymology

Originally a pictograph: depicts a woven thread pierced through by a needle, symbolizing something bound together tightly, inescapable, inevitable.

Later reinterpreted as a phono-semantic compound, with the central element resembling a needle or sharp point, emphasizing “certainty” and “must.”
