Etymology

It is a phono-semantic compound, composed of:

辵 (chwak/착, “to walk slowly, to go”) as the semantic element;

㒸 (su, ‘to follow’) as the phonetic element.

Its original meaning was “to go forward,” which explains why it also came to mean “road.”

Usage in Korean

Used more in literary, scholarly, and classical texts than in everyday speech.

Often carries a nuance of inevitability or culmination (“finally, in the end”).

Common compounds:

수행 (遂行) – execution, carrying out, accomplishment;

달수 (達遂) – full achievement (lit. “reach and accomplish”);

수지 (遂志) – to fulfill one’s will or ambition;

불수 (不遂) – failure, not accomplished.
