石 (석, stone) — phonetic component, later simplified into a variant shape (𲟁 = ⿸广廿), which in small seal script evolved into the current form.

Oracle bone script (甲骨文 jiǎgǔwén) — depicted as a straw mat.

Bronze inscriptions (金文 jinwen) — added 厂 (cliff radical) as a shelter component.

Small seal script (小篆) — evolved into the combination of 巾 + 𲟁 (variant of 石).
