- gentle, yielding, compliant;

Etymology
Pictograph depicts two kneeling people facing a table (巺).
Originally conveyed “to prepare food.”
When borrowed (假借) for the sense “gentle, yielding,” the food-preparation meaning split off into 饌 (찬, side dish) with the 食 radical.
