• thunderous sound;
  • repeated crashing of thunder;

Etymology

Ideogrammatic compound:

Composed of four 雷 (뢰, thunder) characters arranged in a 2×2 grid.

Represents an intensified or multiplied sound of thunder.

Usage in Korean

First attested in the Song dynasty dictionary 《廣韻》(광운).

Appears in the reduplicated form 䨻䨻, describing rolling or booming thunder.

Considered a rare and archaic character; not found in early inscriptions, since 雷 had already become the standard character for "thunder."

Sometimes discussed in philological contexts as a “quadruple 雷,” comparable to other multi-component exaggerative characters.

Additional notes

There exists a more complex, speculative ancestor 𤴐 (32 strokes, archaic form of 雷). By theoretical extension, a quadruple form of 𤴐 would yield a character of 128 strokes, though no historical evidence supports its use.

In extreme speculation, the 52-stroke variant ⿳𤳳霝⿲田田田 (an ornate form of 雷) could be quadrupled to create a character with 208 strokes, but this is purely hypothetical.

Recognized in Unicode CJK Extensions, mainly for completeness of character sets, not for modern usage.
