Etymology

Originally a pictograph (象形): a tree with leaves attached.

Later standardized into a phono-semantic compound:

艹 (초, grass radical) – semantic, indicating plants.

枼 (엽, leaf, phonetic) – phonetic component, later simplified from the pictorial form of a leaf.

葉子 (엽자, yèzi) — leaf

花葉 (화엽) — flower petal

世葉 (세엽) — generation, lineage

前頭葉 (전두엽) — frontal lobe

後頭葉 (후두엽) — occipital lobe

Additional notes

Korean readings: 엽, 섭 (rare, for place names or surnames).

Common surname in Chinese (“Ye” in pinyin, 葉氏).

The meaning “sheet/page” survives in compounds but is largely archaic.
