• warm, mild, temperate;

Etymology

Phono-semantic compound:

水 (수, water) – semantic component, indicating relation to water or liquid.

𥁕 (온, phonetic) – rare and obscure character, composed of 囚 (to confine) + 皿 (dish).

In Shuowen Jiezi (説文解字 shuōwén jiězì), 𥁕 was explained as “gentle, warm,” and by extension used as the phonetic element in 溫.

Original sense may have been linked to the 温 River (溫水) in ancient China (modern Nanpan River, Guizhou).

Later the character came to mean “warm” literally and figuratively.

Usage in Korean

溫泉 (온천) — hot spring

溫和 (온화) — gentle, mild
