  • soup or broth;
  • bathwater;

Etymology

It is a phono-semantic compound, consisting of:

水 (su, “water”) as the semantic element;

昜 (yang, “sunlight, to rise”) as the phonetic element.

Usage in Korean

Refers to soup or broth (탕) in Korean cuisine.

식탁 (食湯) – dining soup (classical usage)

온탕 (溫湯) – warm bath, hot spring

냉탕 (冷湯) – cold bath, cold soup

탕약 (湯藥) – decoction, medicinal broth

Additional notes

In Classical Chinese, also meant “hot water.”

As a verb, “to boil, to scald,” the sense is often written with 燙 and read with a departing tone.

Distinct from 燙 (탕, to scald, to boil), which narrows the sense to the action of heating/boiling.
