Etymology

Originally a pictograph:

Derived from 大 (“big, man”) with an added stroke (一) on top.

Interpreted as a man with hair bound and a hairpin (after coming of age, 관례), symbolizing an adult male.

Some scholars also interpret the form as 天 (“heaven”) with an added stroke, suggesting “the husband/father is above even heaven.”

Semantic range:

- husband, man, adult male (남편, 사내, 지아비);

- teacher, master (선생);

- adverbial particle: “indeed,” “surely.”

- also used as a suffix for professions tied to manual or practical work (e.g., 농부 farmer, 어부 fisherman, 광부 miner).
