叭

  • trumpet sound;
  • horn;

Etymology

A phono-semantic compound:

口 (mouth) — provides the semantic field of sound / voice / blowing.

八 — phonetic element, "pa", supplies the pronunciation and contributes a sense of opening or spreading, which fits the idea of sound bursting outward.

Together, the character depicts a loud, outward-blown sound produced by the mouth.

Usage in Korean

In Korean, 叭 never appears independently and survives solely through the compound 喇叭.

나팔 (喇叭) — trumpet; horn

나발 (喇叭) — trumpet (variant / colloquial form)

나팔 소리 (喇叭 소리) — trumpet sound; blaring noise

Additional notes

叭 is a supportive sound character, not a conceptual one. Its survival depends almost entirely on 喇叭.

It represents raw sound, not refined music (unlike 笛 or 琴).

Because 叭 is short, sharp, and mouth-related, it later gained limited onomatopoeic use in vernacular Chinese, especially for sudden sounds or bursts.

Closely related characters:

喇 — trumpet; blaring sound

吹 — to blow

角 — horn (animal or musical)

號 — trumpet call; signal

鳴 — to sound; to ring

Phonetic / structural relatives:

八 — eight; to divide; to open

叩 — to knock (mouth + action)
