In oracle bone script (甲骨文 jiǎgǔwén), the character shows an image with:

• Something shaped like the ancient form of 凡 in the center, and

• A pair of hands (爪 and 又) drawn above and below it.

This is a pictorial ideogram depicting the act of handing something from one hand to another – symbolizing the concept of “to receive.”
