Etymology

The character's origin is a pictograph of a ladle with a sack used for measuring grain. Because of the ladle’s shape, it also became the name of the constellation (the Big Dipper, 북두칠성). In China, the simplified forms 鬪/ 鬥 are replaced by the character 斗.

Usage in Korean

It is also used in names, meaning 'chief' or 'head of the chief'.
