Etymology

It is a pictograph modeled after 'the shape of a pig's pointed nose facing upward'.

The name comes from the left part of the character 曰 (“mouth”) appearing open or spread horizontally, hence called the “Open Horizontal Mouth Radical.”

Usage in Korean

When used as a radical, some characters relate to pigs, but it is mainly used to classify characters containing the forms 彐, 彑, or ⺕.
