• river, stream;

Etymology

It is one of the characters derived from the radical 巛 (also called “개미허리,” meaning “ant’s waist”).

Usage in Korean

In Korea, 川 refers to a smaller scale body of water than a large river such as 江 (river) or 河 (stream).

In China, 川 simply means “river” without specifying size. It is also used as the abbreviation for Sichuan Province.

Additionally, 川 is the name of a type of soup dish.

In Japan, 川 is mainly read with the native reading かわ (kawa) and is used for all kinds of rivers, including large ones like the Amazon.
