展

Originally written as 㞡 (U+37A1), depicting a person lying stretched out beneath a shelter — suggesting the idea of relaxing or extending.

Later forms added structural elements for clarification. The modern 展 combines:

尸 (corpse radical / shelter form) — semantic, indicating lying down, covering, or extending;

廿 (twenty) and 女 (woman) — phonetic and auxiliary components.

In ancient script, the notion was “to stretch out, to unfold”, which naturally developed into “to display, to exhibit.”

Semantic range:

- to spread out, to extend, to stretch;

- to display, to exhibit, to demonstrate;

- figurative: to develop, to unfold (events, abilities, potential).
