𠂉
- person radical, similar to 亻 and 人 (but, in oracle bone script (楷書, kǎishū), it often represents parts of totally different pictograms);
Etymology
This character is not explained in the Kangxi Dictionary on page 81, but it appears in the oracle bone form of 傷 (상, “to be injured”), where a shape resembling an arrow has been found. As a result, the current scholarly consensus is that the 𠂉 component in 傷 is a contracted form of 矢 (arrow, 시).
Usage in Korean
It belongs to the 方 radical group (모 방).
Most Chinese characters that contain this component (such as 旗, 旅, 族, 施, 旋, etc.) now fall under the 方 radical, but originally, they belonged to the 㫃 radical (깃발 나부낄 언).
In these characters, the 人 (person) component on the right side of 㫃 morphed into the current 𠂉-like shape (specifically 𭤨) when combined with other elements. Over time, in the Kangxi Dictionary, the 㫃 radical was abolished and its characters were merged into the 方 radical group.
