說
- to speak;
- to explain;
- to say;
Etymology
言 (speech, words) – semantic component, related to speech and communication;
兌 (exchange, change) – phonetic component contributing the sounds "shuo/shui/yue" and adding nuance of “exchange” or “interaction.”
Originally indicated speaking or explaining (言) with an added nuance of exchange or interaction (兌).
Over time, different readings developed, expanding the meanings to include:
- soothing or persuading (using words);
- pleasing or delighting (later linked to 悅 “joy”);
- loosening or taking off (linked to 脫 “to remove”).
The meanings of 說 developed along interconnected lines:
- verbal expression — speaking, explaining, stating;
- explanation / theory — doctrines, interpretations, teachings;
- persuasion / pacification — using words to convince, soothe, or reconcile.
This semantic breadth reflects a classical view in which speech is an active force, capable of shaping understanding and behavior.
Usage in Korean
說 is foundational in philosophy, education, politics, and rhetoric.
Speech & explanation:
설명 (說明) — explanation
설화 (說話) — speech; tale
학설 (學說) — theory; doctrine
Persuasion / pacification:

유세 (遊說) — political persuasion; lobbying
달래다 (說) — to soothe or placate (classical sense)
Additional notes
說 treats speech as instrumental, not neutral, words can clarify, persuade, or calm.
Often contrasted with:
言 — mere speech or words
論 — argument or discourse
The “to placate” sense (달랠 세) is especially important in classical and diplomatic contexts.
In Korean glossing, 說 has two readings:
설 — speaking, explanation
세 — persuasion, placation
Related characters:
言 — speech; words
語 — language; utterance
論 — argument; theory
諭 — to instruct; admonish
辯 — debate; eloquence
Among these, 說 emphasizes speech as a tool for influence and understanding, rather than mere expression.
