It is a compound ideographcombining 目 (meaning "eye") and 匕, which is an inverted form of the character for "person" (人). The character depicts a person turning their eyes backward.
艮 is one of the eight trigrams (八卦 bāguà) represented by ☶ and symbolizes the northeast direction, a hand, a mountain, and the concept of stopping or ceasing.
