• blessing;
  • good fortune;
  • happiness;

Etymology

It is traditionally interpreted as an associative compound:

示 (altar, ritual) – indicating sacrificial offerings to heaven;

畐 (bok, full, abundant) – representing a well-prepared sacrificial vessel filled with offerings.

Together, they mean “through ritual offerings, blessings and fortune are bestowed from heaven.”

Because the right-hand element 畐 (bok, full) also provides the sound, some scholars analyze it as a phono-semantic compound. It is also considered etymologically connected with 富 (bu, wealth).

Semantic range:

- blessing, fortune – divine favor or good luck.

- happiness, prosperity – as in 幸福 (행복, happiness).

- good omen – auspicious sign.

Usage in Korean

It became the universal East Asian character for fortune, happiness, and prosperity, deeply embedded in cultural practices from Spring Festival customs to naming traditions across China, Korea, Japan, and Vietnam.

행복 (幸福) – happiness

복록 (福祿) – blessings and emoluments

축복 (祝福) – blessing

복(福) is also used in given names, though in modern Korea it is considered old-fashioned.

Additional notes

Cultural notes:

Bats as symbols of luck: In Chinese, bat is 蝙蝠 (biānfú), where 蝠 (fú) is a homophone of 福. Thus bats symbolize good fortune, frequently appearing in Chinese art.

Upside-down 福 (倒福): Common New Year custom in China. “Upside down” 倒 (dào) sounds the same as “to arrive” 到 (dào), creating the pun “fortune has arrived.”

Pronunciation variation: In Mandarin, 福 is fú, but in Cantonese and Hakka it is still pronounced with the -k ending (fuk), preserving the Middle Chinese entering tone (入聲).

Modern perception: In Korea, 福 as a name element is seen as old-fashioned. In contrast, in the Chinese-speaking world it remains popular in personal names and decorative calligraphy.

Humorous misperception: Because fuk in Cantonese sounds similar to the English swear word, 福 is sometimes unintentionally mocked in English-speaking contexts.
