• paralysis;
  • numbness;

Etymology

Phono-semantic compound:

(병들어 기댈 녁) — semantic element, meaning “disease, illness.”

(낮을 비) — phonetic element, providing the sound bi and connoting a sense of “weakness” or “lowness.”

The composition thus conveys “a disease that brings weakness or dullness,” i.e., a disorder of sensation or motor function.

In bronze and seal script (金文, 篆書), the radical appears as a person lying on a sickbed, symbolizing illness, while contributes both pronunciation and the notion of degeneration or decline.

Usage in Korean

마비 (痲痺) — paralysis, loss of bodily movement.

비증 (痺症) — numbness disorder, neuralgia (traditional term).

비통 (痺痛) — pain caused by numbness or blockage.

In Korean medical and general language, 痺 retains its original medical sense of numbness but also appears metaphorically to describe emotional or spiritual insensitivity, as in “마음이 비처럼 저리다.”

Additional notes

In classical Chinese medicine, 痺 (bì) refers to an obstruction of qi and blood flow due to external climatic evils.

According to the Huangdi Neijing (黃帝內經):

「風寒濕三氣雜至,合而為痺。」

“When wind, cold, and dampness converge, they form the disorder called bì.”

Different forms were distinguished by the dominant cause:

風痺 (풍비) — caused by wind, producing wandering pain.

寒痺 (한비) — caused by cold, producing stiffness.

濕痺 (습비) — caused by dampness, producing heaviness.

Later texts also mention 熱痺 (열비) — “heat-type paralysis.”

Thus, 痺 became a fundamental term in East Asian medical theory, describing not only physical paralysis but also the metaphysical stagnation of flow and feeling.

Cultural note:

The imagery of numbness (痺) often appears metaphorically in literature to express emotional stagnation or spiritual desensitization — a loss of inner vitality akin to physical paralysis.

For example, poets described hearts “痺如寒石” (numb as cold stone), using the medical metaphor to evoke sorrow or apathy.

In this way, 痺 extends beyond pathology to become a symbol of the human struggle to feel and move freely — whether in body or in spirit.
