Etymology
派 is a phonosemantic compound character, made from:
水 (수) – indicating the meaning (“water”), showing that the concept is related to flowing or dividing water;
𠂢 (파) – providing the sound.
Usage in Korean
派 (갈래) originally depicted a stream of water dividing into branches, and over time broadened to mean any kind of division or offshoot — from water currents to ideological “currents.”
By extension, it also came to mean a group, school, or faction.
