派 is a phonosemantic compound character, made from:

水 (수) – indicating the meaning (“water”), showing that the concept is related to flowing or dividing water;

𠂢 (파) – providing the sound.

Usage in Korean

派 (갈래) originally depicted a stream of water dividing into branches, and over time broadened to mean any kind of division or offshoot — from water currents to ideological “currents.”

By extension, it also came to mean a group, school, or faction.
