Etymology

Phono-semantic compound:

木 (tree, wood) – semantic element, indicating material or structure.

羕 (yáng, long-flowing river) – phonetic element, lending sound.

The idea is of something extended and manifest, like a pattern or form. From “the way something looks,” it broadened to “appearance, manner, style.”

Semantic range:

- physical form or shape;

- pattern, model, appearance;

- manner, condition, way something presents itself;

- respectful address (esp. Japanese usage).

Usage in Korean

모양 (模樣) – form, shape

다양 (多樣) – diversity, various forms

동양 (東樣 → 東洋) – the East, Orient (historical form)

상황 (狀況) – situation, condition (with 狀)

Additional notes

The original association with oak tree (상수리나무) has become rare; the dominant meaning is “form, appearance.”
