Etymology

It is a pictograph that was created to resemble a fish.

The top part, shaped like ク, represents the head.

The middle part, , represents the body.

The bottom part, , represents the tail.

Usage in Korean

Most characters related to fish include 魚 and belong to the 魚 radical. It is also used as a surname.

Note: When used as a verb meaning "to catch fish", a different character (which includes the water radical ) is used.

For example:

漁夫 (fisherman)

漁船 (fishing boat)

漁獲 (fish catch)

漁業 (fishing industry)

So, be careful not to confuse 魚 (fish) with (to fish).

Additional notes

In simplified Chinese, the bottom is changed to a single stroke , forming the character 鱼.

In Japanese, a variant form 𩵋 replaces the bottom with .
