魚
- fish;
Etymology
It is a pictograph that was created to resemble a fish.
The top part, shaped like ク, represents the head.
The middle part, 田, represents the body.
The bottom part, 灬, represents the tail.
Usage in Korean
Most characters related to fish include 魚 and belong to the 魚 radical. It is also used as a surname.
Note: When used as a verb meaning "to catch fish", a different character 漁 (which includes the water radical 氵) is used.
For example:
漁夫 (fisherman)
漁船 (fishing boat)
漁獲 (fish catch)
漁業 (fishing industry)
So, be careful not to confuse 魚 (fish) with 漁 (to fish).
Additional notes
In simplified Chinese, the bottom 灬 is changed to a single stroke 一, forming the character 鱼.
In Japanese, a variant form 𩵋 replaces the bottom 灬 with 大.
