According to the Shuowen Jiezi (説文解字 shuōwén jiězì), the character originally depicted two feet lying oppositely, symbolizing opposition or being contrary.

The character shows left and right feet spread apart, facing opposite directions. Both the left foot (夕) and right foot (ヰ) parts resemble the shape of feet similar to the character 止. There are some variations of this character in the Clerical script (隸書 lìshū).

Usage in Korean

When used as a radical or semantic component, 舛 primarily conveys meanings related to both feet or legs. It should be noted that 舛 is a chief radical, not a mere component of the radical 夕.
