昇
- to rise, ascend, go up;
Etymology
Phono-semantic compound:
日 (sun) – semantic, indicating rising light.
升 (a measure, also “to rise”) – phonetic element.
Originally, 升 meant a unit of capacity (“a measure, a sheng”), but it also carried the sense “to rise.” To clarify the meaning “rise, ascend (esp. of the sun),” 日 was added, producing 昇.
Semantic range:
- to ascend, climb upward.
- to rise (especially of the sun or celestial bodies).
- to be promoted, advance in rank.
Usage in Korean
昇天 (승천) – ascend to heaven
昇格 (승격) – promotion, advancement
日昇 (일승) – sunrise, the sun rising
昇進 (승진) – promotion at work
Additional notes
In Korea and Japan, 升 and 昇 are usually separated in meaning: 升 = “measure, capacity”; 昇 = “to rise.”
In Chinese usage, 昇 is often treated as an alternative (variant) of 升 and is less commonly used.
Related character: 陞, also meaning “to rise/ascend,” but often used for “to go up (stairs or steps).”
