Etymology

Originally a pictograph/ideograph:

Depicts a line balanced evenly, symbolizing “levelness, equality.”

In early bronze inscriptions, the form resembled a flat surface with something pressed evenly upon it.

From the idea of flatness came meanings of fairness, balance, and peace.
