• eight, the number 8, the eighth in order;

Etymology

Originally, 八 also had the meaning “to divide”, but that meaning has mostly disappeared in modern usage and has been replaced by 分 (to divide, 분).

Its complex form (variant) is 捌, which means "to break apart" or is used in formal/legal numbering for "eight."

Depending on the typeface or calligraphic style, the right stroke of 八 can be written not with a sharp angle, but as a gentle, straight curve, like ㇏, and this is perfectly acceptable.
