• to spread, to lay out, to display;

Etymology

Phono-semantic compound formed from:

金 (metal, tool, material) — indicating connection to physical work or objects.

甫 (po) — providing sound and connotation of foundation, spreading, or beginning.

Originally, the character referred to “laying out metal or sheets”, and by extension, to spreading or displaying any material.

Later, the meaning broadened metaphorically to laying out goods — hence, a store or shop.

Usage in Korean

In Korean compounds, 鋪 is often used in the sense of “store” (점포, 분포, 약포) or “spread/display” (포진, 포설).
