Etymology

A compound character:

冄 (yeom / rǎn, “to advance, move forward”)

邑 (“city, settlement”)

Originally indicating a place name or locality. Later extended phonetically to a wide range of functions: interrogative, demonstrative, modal particle, and phonetic loan in transliterations.

Usage in Korean

In foreign transliterations, especially in East Asia, 那 is frequently used not for its meaning but purely for its sound “na.”
