• distant, far away;

Etymology

It is a phono-semantic compound, combining:

辵 (chwak/착, “to walk slowly, to go”) as the semantic element;

袁 (won, a surname/phonetic element) for the sound.

Usage in Korean

Traditionally, when meaning “far” it was read with the falling-rising tone (상성), and when meaning “to distance oneself, to avoid” it was read with the falling tone (거성), though this distinction is no longer used in modern Korean or Japanese.

Alternative forms

In Korea and Japan, the lower “ㄴ”-shaped stroke of 袁 is written straight, whereas in Chinese the original 袁 form is kept.
