 is written straight, whereas in Chinese the original 

It is a phono-semantic compound, combining:


to walk slowly, to go slowly

 (chwak/착, “to walk slowly, to go”) as the semantic element;


 (won, a surname/phonetic element) for the sound.

Traditionally, when meaning “far” it was read with the falling-rising tone (상성), and when meaning “to distance oneself, to avoid” it was read with the falling tone (거성), though this distinction is no longer used in modern Korean or Japanese.
